Dentures can help fill out the appearance of your face, and they can be made to resemble your natural teeth so that your face doesn’t change much. When people lose all of their teeth, facial muscles can sag, making them look older.

  • Conventional dentures are made and placed in the mouth after all teeth are removed and tissues have a chance to heal, which can take several months.
  • Immediate dentures are inserted on the same day that remaining teeth are removed. The dentist will take measurements and make models of your jaw during a preliminary visit, and you won’t have to be without teeth during the healing period. Immediate dentures may have to be adjusted after the gums and jaw heal.
  • Overdenture dentures fit over a few remaining natural teeth and can help preserve the jawbone.

What will my dentures feel like after I get them?

New dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until the patient gets used to them. They might feel loose while tongue and cheek muscles learn how to keep the dentures in place. Soreness and minor irritation are common, but they usually go away as patients get used to the new appliance.

Should I expect a change in my oral hygiene after I receive the dentures?

Dentures require good oral hygiene, just like caring for natural teeth. Denture-wearers should brush their gums, tongues and roofs of their mouths every morning with a soft-bristled brush to stimulate circulation in the gums and remove plaque. And the dentures themselves should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque.

Will I need to apply adhesives to my dentures?

Sometimes, denture wearers may use adhesives to keep the appliance in place. Follow the recommendation of the dentist, and if adhesives are needed, follow the directions exactly. 

Will I need to continue visiting the dentist after I’ve received the dentures? 

If the dentures stop fitting well, call the dentist, and you’ll still need regular check-ups to monitor your oral health and make sure the dentures are fitting properly.
